Since 1997 Thunder has taught and supported student/athletes from Elgin to Yorkville and from Naperville to DeKalb. While striving for excellence in all aspects of the game, we promote a well rounded program of exercise, teamwork, friendly competition and family fun.
Northern Illinois Thunder Softball started in 1997 when a group of gentlemen (Stan Schumacher, Dan Goedken, Ken Hiscox, Frank Weese, Joe Spitzzeri and Perry Clark) wanted to start a competitive softball team to help feed the Kaneland High School softball program. They didn’t want to be affiliated with any governmental bodies or park districts. After several months of discussion and planning they formed Kaneland Thunder Softball, a non-profit group that would have two teams the first season (14U & 16U). At first the teams had players from Kaneland School District but later during the first season the 16U team added Alesia Perry (Yorkville HS). The rest is Thunder history.
In 2002 the Thunder board officially voted on changing the name. The reason for the name change was to more accurately reflect that our teams are comprised of student/athletes from Elgin to Yorkville and from Naperville to DeKalb. Northern Illinois Thunder Softball has over 90 student/athletes in its program with four different age levels. We pride ourselves on being a close “family” organization and work very hard year round to maintain that image. Thunder softball is about the student/athlete first and winning second. We encourage our student/athletes to experience sports, educational, and religious activities during the entire year. Our philosophy is:
  • 1st – Family (most important)
  • 2nd – School/Religion
  • 3rd – Softball

We continue to grow as a softball organization and strive to provide our student/athletes with the best possible softball experience. It is a hard task, but we feel with great volunteers and a hard working coaching staff we can accomplish this goal. We hope that your daughter can have the opportunity to experience THUNDER!
